Pull Quote: Communities begin with one conversation and a willingness to show up.

The First 10 Years, The Next 10 Years – પહેલાંનાં ૧૦ વર્ષ, આગળનાં ૧૦ વર્ષ

Hear Jina read her story aloud in her own voice.

Sometimes I wonder how life connects the dots.

A LinkedIn follow. A few conversations with someone I didn’t know much about at the time. And today, somehow, those small moments have led me to write my story on HeroPress. If someone had told the girl who graduated from college in 2015 that one day she would be sharing her WordPress journey here, I would never have believed them.

Diving In

My first ten years in WordPress weren’t just about learning how to write code. They were about learning how to grow through uncertainty, motherhood, self-doubt, and, most importantly, community.

I joined my first company in 2015, fresh out of college. I knew Core PHP, but WordPress was completely new to me. I had only heard its name before my interview. My first month was as an unpaid trainee, and by the second month I was already building websites for clients. Soon after, I was given the opportunity to work on the plugin, Oasis Workflow. Those five years became my real classroom. I learned plugin development, worked with React and Gutenberg during their early adoption, and discovered that WordPress was much more than a CMS—it was an ecosystem that never stopped evolving.

Building A Product

Around the same time, an opportunity came my way to build a Google Sheets integration for Contact Form 7. That small feature eventually became GSheetConnector. As more users adopted it, their feedback shaped the product. Ten thousand users became twenty thousand, new requirements became new features, and in 2018 we launched the Pro version. What started as a single integration gradually grew into a family of connector plugins. Looking back, it taught me one of the biggest lessons in product development: listen to your users, because they will help build the roadmap with you.

In 2019, I attended my first WordCamp in Vadodara. Until then, WordPress had mostly meant code and client work. WordCamp introduced me to the people behind the software. I made new connections, learned from contributors, and realized there was an entire community that believed in sharing knowledge instead of keeping it to themselves.

Then came the most challenging chapter of my life.

Everything Everywhere, Upside Down

Between 2020 and 2025, I was leading our company’s Vadodara branch while the world suddenly changed because of COVID-19. Like many others, I shifted to working from home. During the same period, I became a mother. My days became a balance of meetings, deployments, household responsibilities, and raising my daughter. Working from home gave me flexibility, and I will always be grateful to Mr. Abdullah for trusting me with that flexibility, but it also came with responsibilities that are difficult to explain unless you’ve lived them.

For five years, my focus was simple: my family and my job. I wasn’t learning new technologies. I wasn’t attending events. I wasn’t contributing to WordPress. As AI, modern development workflows, and new technologies continued to evolve, I often felt as though the industry had moved ahead while I was standing still. It was an uncomfortable feeling, and for a long time I questioned whether I had fallen behind.

Going To WordCamp

Everything changed again in late 2025 when GSheetConnector sponsored WordCamp Surat. Meeting people from the community reignited something I had been missing. Soon after, I learned that WordCamp Asia 2026 would be held in Mumbai. I wanted to attend, but I couldn’t stop thinking about the practical challenges. Could I travel with my daughter? Could we afford it? Would everything work out?

I applied for the Zeel Thakkar Scholarship with hope more than confidence, and to my surprise, I received it. My husband took leave from work so he could travel with me and help take care of our daughter. His support made that journey possible.

Contribution Day at WordCamp Asia wasn’t the success I had imagined. My development environment failed at the last moment. My WordPress.org account was temporarily blocked, and to make matters worse, my phone shut down, leaving me without access to my authenticator codes. I sat there feeling completely blank, wondering if I even belonged in that room.

Instead of giving up, I walked over to the Community Team table.

That decision quietly changed my direction.

Building Community

There, Devin introduced me to the process of becoming a Meetup Organizer. I returned home, completed the required training over the following month, attended another meetup to learn from experienced organizers, and received constant encouragement from people like Pooja Derashri and Aditya Kane, who patiently answered every question I had.

In June 2026, we successfully restarted the Vadodara WordPress Meetup. Only a handful of people attended, but to me it represented something much bigger. It reminded me that communities don’t begin with hundreds of people. They begin with one conversation and a willingness to show up.

Looking back, I realize that my first ten years were about building my career. I hope my next ten years will be about building people.

Forging Ahead

I want to strengthen our local WordPress community, encourage students through Campus Connect programs, and help more women—especially mothers who believe their careers have stopped—rediscover opportunities in WordPress. I want to contribute more to WordPress itself, continue learning emerging technologies like AI, build a plugin of my own, and one day attend WordCamp Asia outside India with my daughter and husband by my side. My Daughter already asks me if we’ll be there next year at Malaysia, and every time she does, I’m reminded that dreams don’t have deadlines—they just need commitment.

If my journey has taught me one thing, it’s this: WordPress is not just about software. It is about people.

Every meaningful opportunity in my journey began because someone answered a question, shared knowledge, offered encouragement, or simply believed in me.

To every woman in tech—and especially every mother trying to balance family, work, and her own dreams—please remember this: you are doing better than you think. Take one step at a time. Reach out to people. Ask questions without fear. Help even one other person if you can.

Because that’s what WordPress has taught me over the past ten years.

Connect. Learn. Grow.

And then help someone else do the same.
